Notice to owners of Interchangeable Lens Sony Digital Photo Frame ‘S-Frame’DPF-E710 for firmware upgrade

Note: Before starting the update, we recommend that you back up to a computer or a memory card the image and music data that are saved on the digital photo frame's internal memory.

Important notes:

・During the update (when performing steps 7 described below), ensure that the digital photo frame and the AC adaptor are placed on a stable location, so that the AC adaptor may not be removed and the digital photo frame is not turned off.
Loss of power during the update may cause the digital photo frame to malfunction.

Turn on the digital photo frame by pressing the ≪Power≫ button.
Press the ≪MENU≫ button.
Select Settings using the Direction ≪≫ buttons.
Select System Information using the Direction ≪≫ buttons, and press the ≪ (ENTER)≫ button.
Check the firmware version.

If the version is displayed as "1.08.1.00" or lower, update the firmware in accordance with the procedures starting from "Step2. Preparations for firmware update".
Press the ≪ (ENTER)≫ button after you have checked the firmware version.
Press the ≪MENU≫ button.
Turn off the digital photo frame.

Before downloading the firmware, please ensure that your computer is running one of the following operating systems and prepare one of the following recording media.

Recording Media

One of the following types of recording media (Memory capacity is between 32 MB and 32 GB).

“Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo”
SD memory card

See "About the memory cards" in the device's Operating Instructions for more details about compatible recording media.

Notes: Operation is not guaranteed for all "Memory Stick" media, SD memory cards, or USB flash drives.

Make sure no program other than your Internet browser is running.
You must accept the terms of the End User License Agreement at the bottom of the page. After reading this agreement, click "Agree".
The download of the DFE710V2.zip 4.91MB (5,157,341 bytes) file will start.
Save the file to the Desktop of your computer (recommended).

END-USER AGREEMENT FOR SONY UPDATE SOFTWARE

YOU SHOULD CAREFULLY READ THE FOLLOWING AGREEMENT BEFORE EXECUTING THIS SOFTWARE UPDATE.  DOWNLOADING THE UPDATE FILES OF SOFTWARE (“SOFTWARE”) INDICATES YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THIS AGREEMENT.

1. Outline of the SOFTWARE
The SOFTWARE is the updater for the firmware of Sony digital photo frame products DPF-E710 (collectively as “PRODUCTS”) and does not run on the devices other than the PRODUCTS. 
If you do not own or use the PRODUCT, you shall refrain from downloading and using the SOFTWARE.
 
2. Copyright and License
All title and copyright in and to the SOFTWARE (including but not limited to any images, photographs, animation, video, audio, music, text and "applets", incorporated into the SOFTWARE), and any copies of the SOFTWARE, are owned by Sony Corporation (“SONY”) or its suppliers.  All rights not specifically granted under this Agreement are reserved by SONY.  

3. License and Restrictions
(1)	You may install and use one copy of the SOFTWARE on your PRODUCT solely for updating the firmware of the PRODUCT.
(2)	You may make temporary copies of the SOFTWARE on your computer and memory card to the extent that it is needed for updating the firmware of the PRODUCT.
(3)	To the extent that such restrictions are not prohibited by applicable laws, you may not modify, reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the SOFTWARE in whole or in part.

4. Executing the SOFTWARE Update
(4)	Please follow the instruction shown on this web page for the updating to download the SOFTWARE and to install it. 
(5)	The license fee for the SOFTWARE is free, but you will procure a computer, memory card and other peripherals and bear expenses of communication and electricity needed for the updating. 

4. NO WARRANTY AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
(1)	You may acknowledge and agree that the updating by the SOFTWARE shall not mean to correct or fix all bugs or other defects (if any) of the firmware of the PRODUCT.
(2)	THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED BY SONY HEREUNDER ON AN "AS IS" BASIS, AND UNLESS OTHER TERMS AND CONDITIONS ARE EXPRESSLY SET FORTH BY SONY IN WRITING AND TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED UNDER THE APPLICABLE LAWS AND REGULATIONS, NO WAARNTY IS EXTENDED WHATSOVER.
(3)	HEREINAFTER, SONY, ITS AFFILIATES AND THEIR RESPECTIVE LICENSOR'S SHALL BE COLLECTIVELY REFERRED TO AS "SONY". TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED UNDER THE APPLICABLE LAWS AND REGULATIONS, SONY SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY CLAIM, DEMAND OR ACTION, IRRESPECTIVE OF THE NATURE OF THE CAUSE OF CLAIM, DEMAND OR ACTION, ALLEGING ANY LOSS OR DAMAGES, DIRECT, INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES FOR BREACH OF ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY, BREACH OF CONTRACT, NEGLIGENCE, STRICT LIABILITY OR ANY OTHER LEGAL THEORY RELATED TO THIS UPDATE SERVICE AND/OR THE SOFTWARE EXCEPT IN THE EVENT OF DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE CAUSED BY SONY’S GROSS NEGLIGENCE OR WILLFUL MISCONDUCT. SUCH DAMAGES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, LOSS OF PROFITS, LOSS OF REVENUE, LOSS OF DATA, LOSS OF USE OF THE SOFTWARE OR ANY ASSOCIATED HARDWARE, DOWN TIME AND USER'S TIME, EVEN IF SONY HAS BEEN ADVISED OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH DAMAGES.  IN ANY CASE, SAVE FOR THE CASE OF DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR PROPERTY DAMAGE CAUSED BY SONY’S GROSS NEGLIGENCE OR WILLFUL MISCONDUCT, SONY'S ENTIRE LIABILITY UNDER ANY PROVISION OF THIS AGREEMENT SHALL BE LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT ACTUALLY PAID BY YOU THAT IS ALLOCABLE TO THE SOFTWARE.  SOME JURISDICTIONS DO NOT ALLOW THE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION OF CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL DAMAGES, SO THE ABOVE EXCLUSION OR LIMITATION MAY NOT APPLY TO YOU.

5. Miscellaneous
(1)	The terms and conditions of the repairing the PRODUCT set forth by Sony in the warranty card of the PRODUCT will be applied in case any defect is found after the updating by the SOFTWARE.
(2)	This agreement shall be governed by the laws of Japan, without regards to conflict of laws provisions. The parties hereby consent to submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Japan.
(3)	These Terms do not affect (and should not be read to affect) your statutory rights which cannot be waived or limited by contract.
(4)	If any part of this agreement is held invalid or unenforceable, the other parts will remain valid.

6. Government end users restricted rights
If the SOFTWARE is being acquired by or on behalf of the United States government or any other governmental entity in any country seeking or applying rights similar to those customarily claimed by the United States government, such SOFTWARE is a “commercial item” as that term is defined at 48 C.F.R. (“FAR”) 2.101, and is licensed in accordance with this Agreement. Manufacturer is Sony Corporation, 1-7-1 Konan, MInato-ku, Tokyo, Japan.

Note: This is the dedicated update file for DPF-E710 only. You cannot use this file with other Sony digital photo frames.

Using Windows® 7 / Windows Vista®

Right-click the downloaded zip file (DFE710V2.zip).
Click "Extract All".
Click "Extract" in the "Extract Compressed (Zipped) Folders" window that has opened.
The DFE710V2folder is now open on your computer's desktop.

Using Windows® XP

Right-click the downloaded zip file (DFE710V2.zip).
Click "Extract All".
Click "Next" in the "Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard".
Click "Next".
Click "Finish".
DFE710V2folder is now open on your computer's desktop.

Using Mac OS

Double-click the saved file (DFE710V2.zip).
The DFE710V2folder is created on your desktop.
The unzipped DFE710V2 folder contains the following update file:
DFE710V2.VUP
Depending on your operating environment, some file extensions （.VUP / .vup）may not be displayed.

Note: Depending on your operating system, the file may be automatically unzipped when it is downloaded. You may also not be able to unzip the file using the procedures described above, depending on the operating system that you are using. In latter case, please use a decompression tool.

The following section describes how to update using a “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo”. If you are using an SD memory card, please replace “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” with your using memory card in the following explanations.
Prepare an initialized (formatted) “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo”. For details about how to initialize (format) it, please see the Operating Instructions of your digital camera.

Note

Please use a “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” that has been initialized (formatted) by your digital camera, or initialized (formatted) by the dedicated Memory Stick formatting software "Memory Stick Formatter".
Please use an SD memory card that has been initialized (formatted) by your digital camera.
We do not recommend initializing (formatting) with a computer, as the DPF-E710 may not recognize the recording medium, depending on the type of initialization format. If you have no choice but to use a recording medium that has been initialized with a computer, copy a JPEG image file and check to see if it is displayed correctly on the DPF-E710.

Note

The firmware update may fail if the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” contains other files as well as the update files. You should therefore always use a “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” that has just been initialized (formatted).

Copy the update files to the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” using either of the following methods:

If your computer is equipped with a Memory Stick slot

Insert the initialized (formatted) “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” into the Memory Stick slot on your computer.
Open the DFE710V2 folder on your desktop, and copy the update file DFE710V2.VUP inside it to the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo”.
Drag and drop the update file to the root of the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo”, without creating any new folder for it.

If your computer has no Memory Stick slot

Insert the initialized (formatted) “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” into the Memory Stick slot on your digital camera.
Connect your digital camera to your computer using a USB cable.
Open the DFE710V2 folder on your desktop, and copy the update file DFE710V2.VUP inside it to the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” that you have inserted into your digital camera.
Drag and drop the update file to the root of the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo”, without creating any new folder for it.

Note: Perform the steps 1 to 6 by using the buttons of the digital picture frame. The operation cannot be performed with the remote control.

Check that the digital photo frame is turned off (that the ≪(POWER)≫ button is red).
Insert the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” containing the copied update file into the Memory Stick slot on the digital photo frame.
Turn on the digital photo frame by pressing the ≪(POWER)≫ button while pressing and holding down the ≪VIEW MODE≫ button.
Keep pressing the ≪VIEW MODE≫ button until the following message is displayed.
Press the ≪ (ENTER)≫ button.
Make sure that the following message is displayed on the LCD screen.

Note

If the above display does not appear on the LCD screen after the several minutes, or if the display is distorted, remove the AC adaptor from the digital photo frame and re-insert it.
Check that the ≪(POWER)≫ button is green, press the ≪(POWER)≫ button to turn off the power, and start the update process again from "Step 7. Update the firmware".
Please consult your local Sony customer service centre if the above display still does not appear on the LCD screen.
Press the ≪ (ENTER)≫ button.
The LCD screen changes to the“Updating・・・”screen, and the firmware update starts.
It takes about 1 minutes to perform the firmware.

Note

During the execution of these update procedures, ensure that the digital photo frame and the AC adaptor are placed on a stable location, so that the AC adaptor may not be removed and the digital photo frame is not turned off.
Also ensure that the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” is firmly inserted into the digital photo frame during the update so that it cannot fall out.
The digital photo frame may malfunction if power to the device is lost, or if the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” is removed during the update.
When the "Completed" message appears on the LCD screen, press the ≪(POWER)≫ button to turn of the power of the digital photo frame.
Remove the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” from the digital photo frame.

Note: The first time you turn the power on after the update, the digital photo frame will take longer to start than usual.

Turn on the digital photo frame by pressing the≪(POWER)≫ button.
Press the ≪MENU≫ button.
Select Settings using the Direction ≪≫ buttons.
Select System Information using the Direction ≪≫ buttons, and press the ≪ (ENTER)≫ button.
Confirm that the firmware version is "1.20.1.00".

Note

If the version displayed is anything else than "1.20.1.00", or no version number is displayed:
The firmware update was not performed correctly. Perform the firmware update again from the beginning
Press the ≪ (ENTER)≫ button after you have checked the firmware version.
Press the ≪MENU≫ button.
Turn off the digital photo frame.

This completes the update procedure of the firmware.

Notes: The update file in the “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo” is not needed anymore after you performed the firmware update. Please remove it from your “Memory Stick” / “Memory Stick Duo”.
There is no need to restore backed up image and music data to the device after a firmware update if the image and music data in its internal memory is the same as it was before the firmware update.
You should therefore check the image and music data in the device's internal memory before attempt to restore backup image data to its internal memory.
