コーエン国防長官、アジア歴訪
qU.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen wwound up a four-day trip to Japan today, and is now in South Korea. Jocelyn Ford reports from Tokyo that North Korea etops the agenda of his week-long visit to Asia.
Ford: "Defense Secretary William Cohen and Japanese foreign minister Masahiko Komura agreed Thursday it is important for the two countries to closely monitor North Korea for signs it may fire another missile. Foreign Minister Komura also suggested the United States, Japan, and South Korea send Pyongyang a strong warning to deter it from conducting a second test firing. North Korea shocked Japan last August when it launched a rballistic missile that flew over the country. Since then, Tokyo has started to modernize its defense systems. Defense Secretary Cohen told reporters Thursday he welcomes Japan's recent decision to join a project to develop a ttheater missile defense system. Once developed, the system would shoot down missiles before they strike. Mr. Cohen ydismissed concerns expressed by China that the theater missile defense system would threaten Beijing and uprovoke an iarms race in the region. China is particularly upset that Taiwan is considering joining the theater missile defense project. This is Jocelyn Ford for VOA News in Tokyo."

フォード：「ウィリアム・コーエン国防長官と日本の高村正彦外相は木曜日、またミサイルを発射する兆候がないか、北朝鮮をしっかりと監視することが両国にとって重要であるという点で意見が一致しました。高村外相はまた、北朝鮮政府に対し、２度目の試射を行わないよう米国と日本と韓国が強く警告を発することを提案しています。北朝鮮は昨年の８月、弾道ミサイルを日本を飛び越す形で発射し、日本に衝撃を与えました。その事件があってから、日本政府は自国の防衛システムの近代化を進めています。コーエン国防長官は木曜日、日本が最近、戦域ミサイル防衛システム開発計画への参加を決めたことを歓迎する、と記者団に語りました。このシステムが実現すれば、ミサイルは着弾する前に撃ち落とされます。中国は、この戦域ミサイル防衛システムが同国政府にとって脅威となり、アジア・極東地域に軍備拡大競争が起こるのではないかとの懸念を表明していますが、コーエン氏はこれを退けました。中国は、台湾がこの戦域ミサイル防衛プロジェクトへの参加を検討していることを、とくに憂慮しています。VOA ニュースのジョスリン・フォードが東京からお伝えしました」。
