Global electricity and broadcasting standards / Can't be used if systems are different. Be aware of each region's electricity and broadcasting circumstances.

The circumstances surrounding world electricity is
more complicated than you expect.
You should know that power supply,
voltage and plug shape vary in different regions.
The same goes for television and video recorders. Each
region has its own system with respect to color displaying,
channel systems, sound outputs, etc.
So when you purchase electric appliances abroad,
it is important to note that the systems match
the circumstances there.

Different electricity/broadcasting circumstances among countries

Power supply/voltage, plug shapes
TelevisionVideosRadios

Power supply/voltage, plug shapes
There are about 15 kinds of plugs in the world.
For example, we can find differences in the numbers of pins
inserted into sockets or the shape/design of the plugs.
Some have 2 pins, others have 3, and there are square types
and round types. Various types of plugs are used in
each country and region.

>>Most countries use different voltage from Japan.
The AC100V voltage is found only in the Japanese electric
environment. Other countries generally define the available
voltage within the 110 to 240 range.
So it may be very dangerous in other countries to use electric
appliances conforming to the Japanese environment, even if
you recognize that the plug shape is the same as the one used
in other regions.

>>Also sometimes it is very difficult to
obtain dry batteries.

Currently it is difficult to find some types of batteries (e.g. type 4)
abroad. But you can use any batteries as long as their size
and voltage match and you do not have to worry about
what they are made of.

Radios
>>Radios cannot be used if different kind
of radio waves are transmitted.

Four kinds of radio waves: longwave (LW), middlewave (MW;
corresponding to AM in Japan), shortwave (SW) and ultrashort (FM)
are used in the world. A minor wave in Japan is sometimes
the major one in other countries.

>>Even if the same kinds of waves are used
in a certain region, you cannot receive the wave
if the bandwidth is different. Bandwidths of the
radio wave depends on the countries.

For example, FM bandwidth range is from 76 MHz to 90 MHz in Japan,
but it is from 87.5 MHz to 108 MHz in the United States.
So Japanese radio covers only the range from 87.5 MHz to 90 MHz.
The same logic is applicable to the other waves.

Radio broadcasting frequencies around the world

Television
>>You may not be able to receive pictures or sounds
if there is a difference in the broadcast method.

There are 14 kinds of broadcast styles.
Each broadcast type is identified with the alphabet characters
A to N according to the numbers of scanlines, intervals between
picture waves and sound waves, and modulation types.
If your television does not conform to the local broadcast style,
you cannot receive pictures and sounds.

>>You cannot enjoy colored pictures
if the color systems are different.

For televisions, there are 3 types of color systems: NTSC,
PAL and SECAM. To receive colored pictures, your device
must conform to the local color system.

>>You cannot receive the waves
if the channel frequency is different.

Channel style is categorized according to the frequency
allocated to each channel. For example, the frequency is
allocated to channel 4 is 171.25MHz in Japan. On the other hand,
67.25MHz is allocated to the same channel number in the
United States. You cannot watch the program on channel 4 in US
with your Japanese device.

>>Also the stereo broadcasting
system is different among the regions.

Currently there are 7 types in stereo broadcasting. If your TV
does not conform to the style there, you cannot receive the
sounds as stereo. Only a small number of regions offer
bilingual broadcasting.

Videos
>>You cannot play the video tape
if the color system is different.

For example, in the United States or Canada where
the same color system as Japan is applied, you can play
video tapes recorded in Japan. But it is not possible in
Europe due to a different color system.

>>You cannot use your video recorder
If the broadcast and channel systems are different.
Your video recorder must match the requirements
not only for the color system, but also for the broadcast and
channel systems. For example, you cannot use the video
recorders made for Japanese customers in the United States,
because the channel system is different (even though
US devices have a specification corresponding to Japanese
ones with respect to broadcast and color systems).

>>When displaying pictures via the RF terminal,
please pay attention to frequencies.

Please pay attention to the kind of RF signals if you want your
video recorder to output signals to TV via the RF terminal.
The signals used in Japan are channel 1 (91.25MHz) and
channel 2 (97.25MHz) , which are not applicable in the United States.
In Europe and other countries, the bandwidth for UHF channels
is used as a RF signal. But there are no problems if you use
video/sound terminals for the TV outputs.

>>The recording time of the same length video tapes
may be different due to the system difference.

You can use your raw tapes everywhere because
the same regulation is applied globally for raw video tapes.
But the recording time may vary depending on the color systems
of the video recorders. With respect to video software
on the market, the tapes may only be played on the devices
that have the same standards as the one you recorded with.
